I’ve always had a bit of a fascination with the Amish. Their simple ways, their faith, the sense of community. I’d seen reviews for Beverly Lewis’ The Shunning so I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to review it. It would give me and my husband something to talk about as he is also interested in the Amish way. It would be something worthwhile to watch on “date night” as opposed to some of the garbage that we find on Netflix. We cuddled up on the couch under heavy blankets (it was COLD in our house on Friday) and were transported Lancaster  County, Pennsylvania – Amish Country. We were introduced to two women who seemed to have their share of secrets- one who enjoyed the indulgences of the English while being destined to marry the Amish bishop and another English woman who has a fascination, or perhaps something more, with the Amish. These two stories intertwine as this story unravels. We were capitivated from the beginning and were quite satisfied with the ending of the movie as well. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that this was a movie that I would not mind sharing with my family if we were looking to watch a movie together. It brings up good discussion points and feelings that people many struggle with whether they are Amish or not – where do I fit? Where do I belong? Who am I?

Here’s a little bit more about the movie from their facebook page:

Based on the 1997 novel by New York Times best-selling author Beverly Lewis, The Shunning tells the story of Katie Lapp (Panabaker,) a young Amish woman who makes a discovery that throws her life into confusion. On the eve of Katie’s wedding to widower Bishop John (Jenkins,) a mysterious “Englisher” (Stringfield) arrives in Lancaster County and startling news comes from her anguished Old Order Amish father (Oberst) and mother. Nothing prepares Katie for the devastation their confession brings. Feeling betrayed, Katie watches as the only life she has ever known begins to unravel, leaving in its wake a furrow of pain…and a future of hope.
