Product: Electrical Connections PDF
Company: AIMS Education Foundation
I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand.
This is the corner stone of AIMS Education Foundation‘s products. It’s one thing for information to be provided to a student but without giving them time to explore and use their own two hands then it is possible, sometimes likely, that the information will go in one ear and out the other. Our homeschool is pretty active place so of course we were very eager to review a product from AIMS Education Foundation as part of the TOS Homeschool Crew. We were given a number of choices (be sure to check out the Crew blog to hear about some of the other products members were given to review) but in the end we went with Electrical Connections as we’d recently bought Liam a 101 project electronics science kit from a second hand shop and thought this book would complement it nicely.
This 194 page PDF includes 24 hands on activities for you and your students to try covering a variety of topics on electrical currents including static electricity, electromagnetism, circuits and more. Included in the activities are mini booklets, teachers notes, and making connection questions for students. My favorite part, however, is that all the materials needed for the activities are readily available. There is nothing worst than having a child begging to do a science activity and not being able to scrounge up the materials needed. I also like that most activities followed the scientific method, having students make note of their theories before the experiment and then having them make note of the results afterwards. This is something that I’ve struggled to get my son to do in the past and having the charts and worksheets provided was helpful. The static electicity section actually got my children excitedly exploring this phenomenon at our local playground.
We have not completed the whole book, yet, but plan to continue using it this year as Liam, my eight year old, enjoyed what we have done so far (he’s collecting the mini books because he thinks they are so cool). The material is easily accessible and even my 6 year old is able to understand the information provided. I think that the material is especially suited to the classroom (this product actually won the 2012 Teacher’s Choice Award from Learn Magazine) but is adaptable to homeschooling and can be used with children of varying ages without difficulty. I think that 24.95$US is a wee bit expensive for an e-book, albeit a relatively large one. Most everything needs to be printed so one has to factor that cost into the book as well. We probably would not choose to go out a purchase such a PDF ourselves (we are VERY frugal) but do think it is a decent value and can provide students with a nice supplement to their current science curriculum (or be a nice break from it…..we enjoyed it over the summer months). You can, however, purchase the printed version of this workbook with an additional CD for the same price so that may be another option to look into. With a larger family the PDF is indeed handy as you can print off extra copies of the charts to fill in for each student.
In addition to Electrical Connections, AIMS Education Foundation sells numerous, like many MANY, other products that teach hands on science and math to student from first to ninth grade. I encourage you to take a look at their website for yourself. Also be sure to check out the TOS Homeschool Crew blog as Electrical Connections was only one of several products that were reviewed from this company.
