There is almost music playing somewhere in our house. We all love music and our tastes are very varied – from classical to baroque, celtic music to 2000s pop, then throw in a little Acadian music for good measure. If it is music, we probably listen to is. I’ll admit that some of the lyrics in today’s pop are a bit disturbing and while we do listen to most (most, certainly not all) songs, there are times that I am hoping that my children are not listening too closely to the words. So far, they are mostly about the rhythm, of you can dance to it (regardless of style) then it is good music. There have been a couple times recently, though, were I’ve found myself having to explain lyrics to my children with the disclaimer that musicians don’t always think or care about the messages that they are sending to people. We’re always happy to find music that we don’t have to worry about. When FlyBy Promotions gave us the opportunity to review 1 Girl Nation we jumped on the opportunity. We were introduced to some of our favorite Christian groups via Fly Propeller and this CD seemed to be especially geared towards young girls, so was especially appropriate for my 8 year old daughter.
Unfortunately, being in Canada, the CD just arrived yesterday so we’ve only had time to listen to it once, but I am quite happy to say that we are enjoying it very much. My husband walked in and said “hey, it sounds like (insert mainstream female artists name here).” It does, but the messages are resoundingly good and not somewhat murky or even a little, or a lot, scary. 1 Girl Nation is about living with respect for yourself and for good and not letting other’s influence you. I am especially happy with the song In the Eyes because just yesterday my children and I were discussing true beauty and this song deals with that knowing that you are beautiful in the eyes of God no matter what you or anyone else thinks.
